Since EVERY item in that hotel has to be delivered by boat or hand cart (including soap, toilet paper, food, even the laundry), it adds significantly to the overheads for all hotels in Venice. Add in the fact that sewage often has to be removed by a barge, and it shouldn't really surprise you that hotels in Venice tend to be pricey.

Apartment Orientalis Nov-07 Family Group USA Caroline F. Easy access to apartment from train station requring crossing only one bridge. Apartment was well laid out with bus (boat) near front entrance. If staying there during full moon during certain months, be prepared with boots. We were surprised on our first morning to find water up to the front entrance. This just added to our overall experience and provided onlookers with photo ops as we walked through with grocery bags on our feet.
Apartment Sandrelli Oct-07 UK Janine L. A wonderful good sized apartment set in a quiet location just 10 minutes walk from San Marco Square. There is a good sized kitchen where you can prepare your own meals and a comfortable lounge area. There are shops nearby with a fabulous local deli. Overall we thought the apartment was worth every penny.
Apartment Sandolino Sep-07 Australia Robyn M. We were very happy with our Sandolino apartment, it was larger than we expected and modern. The Guidecca canal view was wonderful and the location really quiet. Daniel was extremely helpful and the cleaning ladies were also excellent (thank you).
